How to Prevent Cavities This Halloween: A Parent’s Guide

ree

Halloween is a time for costumes, pumpkins, and of course, candy! While it’s perfectly fine for kids to enjoy some Halloween treats, the sugar can increase their risk for cavities if we’re not careful. The good news? With a few smart strategies, you can help your kids enjoy the holiday while protecting their teeth.

1.

Choose Treats Wisely

Not all candy is created equal when it comes to dental health. Sticky candies like caramels, gummies, and taffy cling to teeth and feed cavity-causing bacteria for longer. Hard candies that dissolve slowly also keep sugar in the mouth for extended periods. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is a better choice, it melts quickly and rinses away more easily.

2.

Set a “Candy Time”

Instead of snacking on candy throughout the day, encourage kids to enjoy their treats right after a meal. Saliva production is already higher during meals, which helps wash away sugar and neutralize acids. This limits the time sugar sits on their teeth.

3.

Don’t Forget Water

Have your kids drink water after eating candy. Water helps rinse away sugar and food particles, especially if brushing isn’t possible right away. If you live in an area with fluoridated water, that’s an extra cavity-fighting bonus.

4.

Stick to Brushing and Flossing

Remind kids to brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste. On Halloween night, make sure they brush before bed, those sugars shouldn’t sit on teeth overnight. Flossing is equally important for getting between teeth where candy can hide.

5.

Consider a Candy Buy-Back or Trade

Many dental offices (including ours!) offer candy buy-back programs where kids can trade in candy for money or healthier treats. You can also start a family tradition of letting kids choose their favorites and donating or trading the rest.
