Preventive Dental Care: The Ideal Home Care Routine

By Stauffer Family Dental

When it comes to keeping your smile healthy, preventive care is always the best investment. While regular dental visits are essential, what you do at home every day has the biggest impact on preventing cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems.

At Stauffer Family Dental, we often see patients who are surprised to learn that it’s not just whether you brush and floss, but how and when you do it that matters.

Start with Flossing

Most people think brushing should come first, but we recommend starting with flossing.

Flossing removes plaque, food particles, and bacteria from between the teeth and just below the gumline, areas your toothbrush simply can’t reach. Think of it like scraping the bugs off your windshield before washing your car. You’re loosening and removing the debris first so the next step can be more effective.

If you use a Waterpik® or water flosser, use it after traditional flossing. Once the floss has loosened bacteria and debris, the Waterpik can help flush it away from between the teeth and around the gums.

Finish with Brushing

Brushing should be the final step in your oral hygiene routine.

We recommend brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps strengthen enamel and makes teeth more resistant to decay. However, many people unintentionally reduce the benefits of fluoride toothpaste by rinsing it out right after brushing.

Here’s the key: After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste, but do not rinse with water.

Why? Fluoride only benefits your teeth while it remains in contact with them. When you rinse with water right after brushing, you’re washing away all the good stuff (fluoride) before it has a chance to do its job.

Instead, spit out the toothpaste and allow the thin layer of fluoride left behind to remain on your teeth. Think of it as letting the fluoride “marinate” on your teeth for a while. This simple habit can provide additional protection against cavities and help strengthen enamel over time.

What About Mouth Rinse?

Many people assume mouth rinse is a necessary part of a healthy oral care routine. In reality, we don’t routinely recommend mouthwash unless it has been specifically prescribed or recommended by your dentist or hygienist.

If you choose to use a mouth rinse, make sure it is alcohol-free.

Alcohol-based rinses can dry out the mouth, and that can create problems because saliva is one of your mouth’s best natural defenses. Saliva helps neutralize acids, wash away food particles, and protect teeth from decay. A dry mouth increases the risk of cavities and gum disease.

If you’re going to use a mouth rinse, use it before brushing, not after. Remember, brushing is the final step because we want the fluoride from your toothpaste to remain on your teeth for as long as possible.

Don’t Forget Your Tongue

Another often-overlooked part of oral hygiene is your tongue. Your tongue contains thousands of tiny crevices that can harbor bacteria, food debris, and dead cells. These accumulations can contribute to bad breath and may allow bacteria to remain in your mouth even after you’ve cleaned your teeth.

Using a tongue scraper once or twice a day is a simple way to reduce bacterial buildup and help keep your breath fresh. Starting at the back of the tongue, gently pull the scraper forward several times, rinsing away any debris between passes.

After using your tongue scraper, be sure to rinse it thoroughly with water and allow it to air dry. Just like any oral hygiene tool, keeping it clean helps prevent bacteria from accumulating on the scraper itself.

The Ideal Home Care Routine

For the best preventive care, we recommend this order:

  1. Floss

  2. Use a Waterpik® (if you have one)

  3. Use a tongue scraper

  4. Use an alcohol-free mouth rinse if recommended

  5. Brush with fluoride toothpaste

  6. Spit, don’t rinse

These simple steps help remove bacteria, improve gum health, and maximize the protective benefits of fluoride.
