Dental cleanings and routine exams are an important for a healthy growing child. Regular cleanings help to remove plaque and tartar buildup, which can lead to cavities and gum disease. At our dental office, we recommend that our little patients start coming in at age 3 and continue coming every 6 months. During this exam, we will evaluate the teeth, the gums, the soft tissue, and any radiographs.  We will diagnose decay and other oral pathology and help create a conservative treatment plan for you. We will discuss all findings and answer any questions.  We will also watch your child as they grow and recommend evaluation at the orthodontist when the timing is right.

Dental radiographs are an important tool for dentists to diagnose and treat oral health issues. They allow us to see the teeth and jawbone, allowing us to detect cavities, impacted teeth, infections, and other issues that may not be visible during a regular exam. Radiographs should be taken on a regular basis but intervals may vary for each patient.  We are sure to be conservative with the amount we take with children and all patients. 

Two excellent preventive recommendations we make in the office are sealants and fluoride varnish. 

Sealants are an excellent way to help protect teeth from decay. They are thin plastic coatings that are placed on the chewing surfaces of teeth to help prevent cavities.

Fluoride varnish is a topical fluoride treatment that is applied to the teeth to help protect against decay. It helps to strengthen the enamel, making it more resistant to decay. We recommend fluoride varnish for children to help protect their teeth from decay.

At a dental cleaning, your dentist will provide personalized oral hygiene instruction to help you maintain a healthy smile. This includes advice on brushing and flossing, as well as recommendations for the type of toothbrush, toothpaste, and other oral hygiene products that are best for your individual needs.  We also make special recommendations on how to keep braces clean.  For kids, it is great to hear all these recommendations from someone other than parents to help reinforce.  We will talk about oral appliances like pacifiers and help parents with recommendations.

Fillings or restorations are placed when a tooth is either damaged from chipping, fracturing or decay. Composites or white fillings are the most common filling material placed today. Our goal is to retain as much of the original tooth as possible. When completed, the tooth looks like the original tooth in size, shape and color.  Pediatric fillings are a safe and effective treatment.
