There are a lot of dental myths out there and we'd like to take an opportunity to tell you how we truly feel!
1. A healthy smile is more important than a “perfect” smile.
At Stauffer Family Dental, we believe the most important quality about your smile is that it’s healthy for life so you feel confident. If there is something that you'd like to change about your smile- we'd love to help, but our #1 concern is that your teeth are in pristine condition.
2. The most important dental work you’ll ever have done is what you do at home.
Brushing twice a day for 2 minutes and flossing at least once a day are what keeps your smile healthy. Routine cleanings are the key to saving you money in the long-run because we can catch concerns early.
3. It’s more important to have properly aligned teeth than “perfectly straight” teeth.
Can you believe we said that?! We care more about your jaw and tooth alignment, rather than a perfectly straight smile. Dental problems such as crowding, large spacing, headaches due to clenching or grinding and protruding teeth are all reasons for orthodontics. Occasionally, shifting teeth can also be an indicator of periodontal problems.
4. We "poke" your gums because we care about you. Really.
We review your medical history, we ask about your flossing habits, we probe your gums--not to torture you--but because we care about your health and are checking for gum disease! Gum disease affects nearly 50% of adults in the United States. Risk factors for gum disease include genetics, dry mouth, age, medications, and a history of smoking, but most commonly- due to poor flossing habits. So start flossing today!
5. Friends don’t let friends over-whiten their teeth.
Having a white smile is one of easiest the ways to look younger, however, too much of a good thing is not good. Over-bleaching can cause soft-tissue chemical burns and severe sensitivity. In our office, we recommend bleaching for 7-10 days consecutively and then giving your teeth a break. An at-home touch up session is necessary every few months if you enjoy tea, coffee or red wine.
