Why Should I Floss?

Updated: Sep 22, 2023

Flossing is an essential part of your oral health. Plaque that is not removed from brushing can harden into calculus or tartar over time. Your gums require stimulation, otherwise they can become irritated, puffy, and unhealthy. Despite recent controversy regarding flossing, Dr. Hujoel and Dr. Cunha-Cruz explained,

"A meta-analysis of studies examining the impact of flossing on interproximal caries, found that regular (5 days per week) professional flossing resulted in a statistically significant reduction in interproximal caries, a result that was not seen with intermittent (every 3 months) professional flossing nor self-flossing." 1

For a healthy mouth the ADA recommends you:

  • Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or sooner if the bristles are worn.

  • Use an ADA recommended fluoride toothpaste.

  • Brush your tongue. (You can either use a toothbrush or purchase a tongue-scraper from the grocery store.)

  • Floss daily.

  • Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.

  • See your dentist regularly for cleanings and exams. 2
